What's it like being on the Student Leadership Team?

We're always looking for new people to join our Teams, and we wanted to share some of our experiences with YOU so you know what we do and how we work together. Stay tuned for more stories from our AMAZING members!

I love being part of the community that is Durham Book Club. One of my favorite things in the world is reading so I was naturally very excited to learn we had a book club here in Durham. Being able to connect with people over books we all enjoyed is a wonderful thing. One of my favorite parts of DBC is fun activities that are cleverly tied into the books we have been reading. I also love being able to talk with the authors and ask the questions I’d been dying to know after completing their book.

Maeda was a member of Durham Book Club's FIRST Student Leadership Team in 2022 and has been a part of every aspect of DBC's development, from title selection to event planning, from marketing to executing each meeting. In 2022, Maeda had the opportunity to interview Julissa Arce, author of Someone Like Me.

I love being on the Student Leadership Team of Durham Book Club because it gives me a chance to express my love for reading and to spread my excitement about books with other people! I really like meeting new people and talking to them about our favorite things. I think it’s really cool that we get to pick all the books for the club, and it blows my mind to see all the people that have signed up to read the books that we picked! The actual book club is just as much fun as the leadership team, even though I already know what’s going to happen. I’m excited for another year of DBC, with some in-person meetings this time!

I just joined the Student Leadership Team, and I love it because we get to help lead the fun. From picking out the books we read to helping with in-person meetings, it's so fun and great for meeting new people.

Evie joined Durham Book Club's Student Leadership Team in 2023 and is currently a part of the Marketing Team, helping out with the website, and the Planning Team.

My experience as a member of the Student Leadership Committee was great! It was so fun to feel involved and important, and I loved being able to help a group that supports reading! The environment was so positive in all the book club meetings and planning sessions. I think that doing this really helped me with my leadership skills, planning skills, and cooperation. I would recommend everyone to join a committee, because it feels so good to help and all skills are useful. Online meetings make it easy to work as a group, and it was fun to get to know people that love books as much as I do. I hope this year's DBC goes just as great, or even better, than last year.
