The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-time by Mark Haddon

Image
The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-time by Mark Haddon is a fast-paced novel written in first pers on that had me soaring through the chapters.  This book centers around 15-year-old savant Christoper, who lives with his father. The chapters are numbered by each consecutive prime number instead of numerically like other books, which reflects Christoper’s quirks, like hating to be touched and loathing the color yellow.  This book really draws you in, right from the start, beginning with Christopher finding his neighbor’s dog dead, or as he believes, murdered, and a visit to the police station. Christoper begins a quest to find who murdered that dog, and uncovers plenty more secrets about his family and his neighbors.  I definitely recommend this book to seasoned and mature middle-grade readers because it is a quick read but deals with some more mature topics. reviewed by Anya, a current student leader for Durham Book Club

School Trip by Jerry Craft

Image
School Trip is the third book in the series with the first book being new kid. School Trip is about Jordan and his friends going to Paris but a "computer glitch" changes things up. Along with being exposed to new food and cultures this is going to be one crazy trip.  I like S chool Trip because it is funny and also has an eye-opening discussion about race. If you liked the other books in the series as well, or books like the Emmie and friends and you'll definitely want to read this.  reviewed by Jack

The Hero Two Doors Down by Sharon Robinson

Image
The Hero Two Doors Down is a historical fiction book and is written by Sharon Robinson. This book is about a boy named Stephen who meets one of his heroes, who moves two doors away from his house, and they become friends after some time. It is a very fun and good book and I really enjoyed reading it. If you are into baseball, and realistic fiction then I think you would like this book. This review was written by Jasleen.

Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar

Image
Fuzzy Mud is a book about a girl named Tamaya and her best friend, Marshall. One day, they are walking home when they are attacked by a local bully. Tamaya takes a handful of this fuzzy mud and throws it at the bully's face. Later on, Tamaya gets a horrible rash on her hand where the mud touched it, and the next day, the bully is reported missing. Tamaya figures that the bully must have the rash on his face and sets off to find him.  U.S. Senate become involved, and what they uncover might affect the future of the world. I loved Fuzzy Mud because it taught you all about working together and standing up for each other.  reviewed by Finn

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

Image
Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli, the heartfelt sequel to the award-winning Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda , is a YA novel focused on Leah Burke, who is a senior in high school. In the book, Leah is preparing for college while also enjoying the remainder of her high school experience, whether that means drumming with her girl band or hanging out with her close-knit group of friends at Waffle House. Despite Leah’s deep connections to her friends, only her mom knows that she’s bisexual. Not even her friend Simon, who is openly gay and very accepting of Leah about many things, knows about her sexuality. Leah starts dating Garrett, an adorable soccer player at her school, but during a college tour road trip with an old friend, she begins to acknowledge that her heart is elsewhere…. Join Leah on a journey of self discovery in a book that will make you laugh and cry, and that will stick with you long after the last page. reviewed by Sydney

Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper

Image
One of my favorite books is Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper, about a girl named Melody with cerebral palsy. Melody can’t walk or talk, but she is incredibly smart. Everyday she has to stay in the same classroom, for the “retarded” children, and learn the same things. All Melody wants is to learn and be able tell people what’s going on in her head. This book, narrated by Melody, navigates her struggle in a heartfelt tone that portrays all of her emotions. reviewed by Anya

Meet Maeda

I love being part of the community that is Durham Book Club. One of my favorite things in the world is reading so I was naturally very excited to learn we had a book club here in Durham. Being able to connect with people over books we all enjoyed is a wonderful thing. One of my favorite parts of DBC is fun activities that are cleverly tied into the books we have been reading. I also love being able to talk with the authors and ask the questions I’d been dying to know after completing their book. Maeda was a member of Durham Book Club's FIRST Student Leadership Team in 2022 and has been a part of every aspect of DBC's development, from title selection to event planning, from marketing to executing each meeting. In 2022, Maeda had the opportunity to interview Julissa Arce, author of Someone Like Me .
